Best Games of 2010 (halfway point)

Postby Barnabe Jones » Thu May 27, 2010 3:10 pm

Well kids, we're already at the halfway point for 2010. It's been an amazing year so far. With so many of 2009's games getting pushed back to 2010, the year has been jam packed with high quality releases.

What are your top 5 games of 2010 so far, and why?

Here are mine:

-God of War 3 - The game was epic on so many levels. It was a little short IMO, but damn near perfect.

-Heavy Rain - I wasn't expecting too much from Heavy Rain, but I was really pleasantly surprised. I never imagined that a game like this could be so exciting. By far the best story in a game in a long time. I really hope that this games success leads to more releases in this genre.

-Bayonetta - I was almost overlooked this after the news of the poor PS3 port, but I'm so glad I gave it a fair chance. In reality, the port is not as bad as some would lead you to believe. The combat feels similar to the Devil May Cry series, but some how manages to top it at every turn. The game had incredible boss battles, tight combat, brutal difficulty, and a lot of variety in the missions.

-Final Fantasy XIII - I'll admit, it wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it was still very enjoyable. The game has major pacing issues with the tutorial, character development and story. Still when viewed as a whole, it was a fantastic game.

-Bioshock 2 - I'm actually in the process of playing this now. I'm only about halfway through, but returning to Rapture has been a great experience thus far. It feels incredibly similar to the first titles, but that's not a bad thing at all.

(note: I haven't played Read Dead yet, but it's on my list).

my top 5:

-God of War 3 - it raised the bar on so many level.....nothing this year has come close to the quality and epicness of this game

- Heavy Rain - brought something new to gaming and it didnt let me down. great game and a great story, twist and endings

- MAG - a totally tactical new experience that will reward you for working as a team. Teamwork is the key to enjoy this game

- Super Street Fighter 4 - finally a real Street Fighter game.......way better than the original.

- ModNation Racers - Mario Kart fun all over again + insane amount of custumization....enough said

Mass Effect 2 - I've never owned a game that I have wanted to play through more than 3 times before I owned this one. The seamless conversations and the way that any small action gets remembered and can bite you in the arse is really clever. The fighting aspect is also a lot better than ME 1.

God Of War 3 - A total blast and a close second. Lack of DLC and no real incentive to play through more than twice is what pushed this back to number 2.

Red Dead Redemption - GTA on horses. Excellently polished game and lots of fun. Have only scratched the surface and am looking forward to digging into it soon.

Super Street Fighter 4 - Now that I am not getting my arse handed to me constantly online, I have started to really enjoy it. A good game to play if you only have 30 minutes or so to kill

Heavy Rain - Beats FFXIII into 5th spot due to the fact that you don't have to grind away. Good story, nice twist. Character control was a little awkward, and watching Ethan and Madison's characters try to kiss was embarrassingly funny, but overall it was a quality game.

I haven't played Alan Wake or Splinter Cell yet, which was why they did not feature on this list.

I suspect at the end of the year some of these titles would be superseded by the likes of Reach, Fable 3, Crackdown 2 (the first was a blast!), maybe we should revisit this in December?

Heavy Rain is number one for me. I know it wasn't for everyone but it's exactly the type of innovative game the industry needs as this point.

Red Dead Redemption is number two because it's pure, unadulterated fun.

God of War III is my third choice. Everything about it is absolutely top notch.
Gaming's not a matter of life or death. It's much more important than that.

My Choices for Best Games of 2010:

PC:
Starcraft 2- Face it, it broke all game sales records, redefined, renewed the RTS genre...and its starcraft, Protoss Carrier/Colossi ftw!!

Playstation 3:

God of War 3- does it really need an introduction? I mean, people literally pick their jaws off the floor whenever they see this game at my house, it has become a show piece for the whole HD looks great thing. Hell, 4 of my friends bought PS3s just for this game :)

Heavy Rain: I just love that Sony gives developersm, such as Quantic Dreams a chance to make an original and unproven game...this game has atmosphere/mood/graphics/story...and helluva ride for an original IP..can't wait for QD's next title.

Super Street Fighter 4: Well the only reason this was great for me, as i hold SF3 to be the best in the entire series in terms of balanced gameplay, was the inclusion of my favorite Street Fighter character of all time: Ibuki :) Adon is also a blast to play as well. All in all, i dig the new online modes and replays, just wish i had more people that would like to play....

Modnation Racers: EASILY the sleeper hit of the year...man, i spent hours doing my 2 tracks and like 9 mod cars...Truly another example of Sony taking chances with letting their developers, well, develop...

Red Dead Redemption: I haven't played but damn, do i want this game...BAD!!! I want to make my own posse!!
